Abstract
The stabilization of ravines along the bank of Sabarmati River in the campus of IIT Gandhinagar and proposing a cost-effective and eco-friendly solution has been the motivation of current study. This paper focusses on structures using gabions extensively due to the ready availability of required resources in the vicinity. A comparative study between gabion gravity retaining walls and soil reinforced gabion mesh with gabion facia has been carried out. The design for these structures has been simulated in Matlab 2013b and cost of these structures with varying height has been studied. The current design has been modified to include the effect of the width of facia in procedure. Also, the effect of different friction angles on the overall cost of the project has been determined. An optimum, cost-effective, flexible and eco-friendly solution has been proposed for such site conditions.
