Abstract
This paper investigates the effect of an increase in winding layer of fractional slot surface-mounted permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM). For this, two different winding layer in surface-mounted motor that have similar performance are examined. With the increase in winding layers, there is slight variation in torque, but losses in rotor core and permanent magnets decrease. Further, a segmented rotor design in a four-layer winding is chosen to see its influence on rotor losses. The results obtained through a simulation study based on two-dimensional finite element analysis show a reduction in rotor eddy current loss in comparison with the conventional rotor core in the four-layer winding configuration.
