Abstract
This paper proposes a new topology of hybrid flux machine (HFM) which combines the advantage of longitudinal and transverse flux machines. In the proposed topology, flux in the stator core is transverse, and flux in the rotor core is longitudinal. Unlike the transverse flux machine (TFM), it has an equal number of stator and rotor poles for better utilization of the permanent magnets. Further, the single magnet layer per phase design simplifies the rotor construction. Design of the HFM, along with the derivation of average torque, is presented. As the proposed hybrid flux machine is a modified configuration of TFM, it is compared with two different topologies of TFM (with and without pole shaping) using finite element analysis. It is found that HFM can produce the same torque of TFM with 32% reduced magnet.
